Brian Johns, journalist and former publishing director of Penguin, discusses his career as a director at Penguin Books from 1979-87. He talks about coming to Penguin and his plans for the company in regard to fiction and children's books. He then discusses his enthusiasm for Australian fiction; his plan to publish fiction in paperback first, beginning with Blanche d'Alpuget's "Turtle Beach"; imprint "Australian Selection" and publishing "Rebels and precursors" by Richard Haese and "The boat people" with Bruce Grant. Johns then gives his views on publishing and publishing sense; collaboration with Ian Templeman of Fremantle Arts Centre Press on Facey's "A fortunate life"; co-publishing arrangement with McPhee Gribble and teamwork at Penguin. He then gives his views on Australia during the 50s and 60s; importance of Australia Council to Penguin's publishing program; need for a creative arts program in Australia and the importance of books in general and to himself in particular.
