Summary

Collection of photographs documenting the bushfires which devastated parts of Canberra and much of the surrounding region in January 2003. Includes images of the early stages of the mountain fires, fire fighting and backburning in the mountains from the 8-16 Jan., the progress of the fires with the onset of extreme weather conditions on 17 Jan., fires running throughout the night of the 17 Jan. south of Canberra, then intensifying on Saturday the 18 Jan., and the destruction of houses and other property in Chapman and Kambah when the fires reached the southern suburbs of Canberra on Saturday afternoon. Also depicts the destruction caused by the bushfires at Stromlo Forestry settlement and Mount Stromlo Observatory, and the fires which threatened Tharwa and Michelago up until 30 Jan. Includes many images of fire fighters in action. Notes from the photographer provide background, descriptive and explanatory information for many of the images as well as some personal reactions.
