John Scott talks about his early schooling and life in Kyneton, Vic.; his family background; the history of the Funeral Directors business; the customs old and new, of treating the deceased; his family's involvement with the business; the marked change in body preparation in recent years; how understanding and empathy are requisites for being good funeral director; how small business allows for more time with clients; his grandfather's time as a funeral director; prepaid funerals; the changes in laying out of the body; describes the difference between coffins and caskets; the change in traditional approaches to funerals as people move away from 'the church'; discusses viewings; grave gifts; he describes his company's outfitting for funerals; the hearse, its multifunctional use and the traditions involved; how 'Scott's' cover an area of 55 km radius from Kyneton; a new chapel being built to accommodate the change for funerals away from the church (1989).
Scott defines the difference between homily and eulogy. He then explains the committal procedure; his daughter's role in the business and how this was specifically marketed; discusses children's funerals and changes taken place; his work as a celebrant; his company offering follow-up grief counselling for clients; AFDA (Australian Funeral Director's Association); being a member of the Victorian Licensing Board, which is currently lobbying the government for licensing of funeral homes and directors in Victoria; being awarded with the title of Master Funeral Director at AFDA convention; recognition of work with the industry at many levels; the presence of 'T.J. Scott & Sons' in Gisborne; describes the office, staffing and facilities; discusses the acquisition of Australian funeral businesses by American and Canadian firms; occupational, health and safety (OHS) issues and their impact on the industry; the satisfaction from receiving thanks from families.
