A new audit methodology for describing the productive use of resources is presented based on the concept of a resource's economic stock. The economic stock of a resource is identified to have a price-factor and a technical-stock component, both of which typically vary in time. Curves known as 'time-profile' curves are defined and employed to show the time variances in a resource's technical stock and such curves form the basis of the new methodology. The productivity or experience curve form of a typical time-profile curve is also shown to be mathematically describable using power functions which, for the two types of time-profile curve have a reciprocal relationship. The reciprocity of the power functions is used to develop a number of mathematical relationships linking the productivity and productivity performance of resources used in the production of goods and services.
A second class of curves which show time variance in a resource's inventory level is also employed within the methodology. Together with a journal or calendar of major events, causes and effects associated with a resource's technical stock variance can be identified. The methodology is applied to an industry-based case study dealing with the impact of major process-oriented technological change. Variances observed within the study's time and time-profile curves demonstrate the productivity and productivity performance impact of such change. Numerous examples illustrate the general applicability of the methodology to evaluating the effectiveness of resource decision making in general. The dissertation contains detailed discussions and further areas of research opportunities are identified.
