The purpose of this paper is to explore the theological and practical implications associated with moving the Australian Anglican Church and in particular St John's Blackburn from maintenance to mission mode. The Anglican Church of Australia has its roots in the Church of England. Until recent times it was considered the unofficial state religious institution for Australia. It has a culture that for all intents and purposes is in maintenance mode. A fast changing Australian social culture has now relegated the Anglican Church to a marginalized position in society. If it is to survive, it will need to refocus its corporate life around the gospel imperative of mission. This paper will endeavor to identify the major social factors that have changed Australian society and its relationship with the Anglican Church over the last thirty years. Explore the biblical concept of mission and its implications for moving church culture from maintenance to mission mode.
And finally, to encourage every member of the body of Christ to be actively involved in the ministry and mission of Christ. It will have a particular focus on St John's Anglican Church, Blackburn. St John's, is a classic example of an Anglican Church that has had an illustrious past with a membership of seven hundred to one thousand members and was the social hub of the local neighborhood. It had large Sunday schools, mothers clubs, youth groups and was one of the flagships of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. It now has a membership of around one hundred and fifty active members who are mainly older people with a small Sunday school and no youth group. There is an urgent need to refocus church activity from maintaining what is happening to engagement of its community in mission. The goal of this paper is to develop a strategy to move diocesan and in particular St John's Blackburn parish culture from maintenance to mission mode.
With some adaptation this could also be developed as the basis of a congregational workbook to resource and encourage other Anglican parishes to move to engagement with society in mission.
