The objective of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of irrigating field crops in South Carolina. A return-risk analysis is used. The optimizing model compares returns to determine if expected returns for given risk are greater with irrigation than without irrigation. Stated differently, it selects those irrigated or non-irrigated field crops that minimize risk for a given return level. The incorporation of risk aversion behavior has been made possible by the use of a MOTAD multi-period model. On the basis of this theoretical model, an empirical model has been built, which portrays a series of farm plans on efficient E-A frontiers, with and without irrigation. The discounted value of expected returns ('E') and the absolute deviation of this value ('A') determine a point on the E-A frontier.
A locus of such points traces out the frontier. The E-A frontier enables one to consider a series of farm plans, associated with each point, and a plan for each of the ten years of the farm operator's planning horizon. It is assumed that only corn and soybeans may be produced and they may be irrigated or non-irrigated. Apart from crop production activities, the model incorporates other activities like irrigation, machinery investment, machinery financing, principal and interest payment, taxpaying, consumption, off-farm investment, cash saving, short-term borrowing, liabilities, assets, net worth, and risk accounting activities.
