The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between excretion of the catecholamines, norepinephrine and epinephrine, and the normal daily activities of Samoans. The specific research aims are to describe the catecholamine excretion rates and daily activities of Samoans residing in rural Western Samoa, American Samoa, and urban Honolulu, and to examine relationships between daily activities and urinary catecholamine excretion rates. Daily activities and catecholamines are studied among 70 Samoan men and 72 Samoan women (aged 18-37 years) from a rural Western Samoan village, seven villages in American Samoa, and urban Honolulu. Catecholamine excretion rates are determined from 3 consecutive timed urine samples which span 24 hours. Indices of physical activity level, social context, social interaction, and attitudes towards activities are calculated from recall interviews in the total sample and from observations in a 60% subsample.
Regression analyses are used to explore relationships between the behavioral indices and catecholamine excretion. The daily norepinephrine excretion rates of men and women are lower in Western Samoa, intermediate in American Samoa and higher in Honolulu. These differences in norepinephrine excretion are paralleled by similar increases in relative work load from Western Samoa to Honolulu. Regressions also indicate that physical activity is the most important factor affecting norepinephrine excretion. Daily norepinephrine levels are not significantly different by site of residence after controlling for daily activities. Catecholamine excretion rates are significantly lower in women than men. Epinephrine excretion rates in men and women are not significantly different by site of residence.
Regressions indicate that daily activities are not related to daily epinephrine excretion among men. Among women, the amount of social interaction is associated with higher daily epinephrine levels in Western Samoa and Honolulu, but with lower epinephrine levels in American Samoa. Daily epinephrine excretion rates are also significantly higher among American Samoan women compared to Western Samoa and Honolulu after controlling for daily activities. These results demonstrate: (1) daily activities have a measurable effect on catecholamine excretion, (2) norepinephrine and epinephrine have a differential response to physical activity and psychosocial stimuli, (3) there is a marked sex difference in catecholamine response, and (4) unmeasured aspects of modernization also affect catecholamine response.
