Ainsley Gotto was born in Brisbane in 1946. She attended school in Melbourne and in 1961 completed a stenography course at Canberra Technical College. In 1968, aged twenty-two, she was appointed principal private secretary to the Prime Minister, John Gorton. Gotto retained her position after Gorton stepped down as Prime Minister and became Minister of Defence, but left to work for Drake International in 1972, where she remained until 1978. Gotto's career after this time turned to television and various business ventures that included an interior design consultancy based on the Queensland Gold Coast and her own company, Ainsley Gotto International. More recent activities include a period as national president of the Australian chapter of Women Chiefs of Enterprises International.
