Summary

Correspondence, promissory notes, legal and financial documents, many of them addressed to Gordon and the other trustees of the Empire newspaper, 1857-59. The correspondents include Henry Parkes.

Memorandum on English gas companies (1867) and documents concerning a loan to the government of Fiji (1872-73).

Biography/History

Sydney merchant, pastoralist and politician. Gordon was one of the trustees of the Empire, the newspaper managed and edited by Henry Parkes, following its collapse in 1858.
