- Biography/History:
-
Robert Brooks and Co. was a London firm of merchants and one of the largest importers of Australian wool in the nineteenth century. In 1842 Robert Towns was appointed the Sydney agent to replace Ranulph Dacre. He quickly established himself as a mercantile agent and later involved the firm in his cotton-growing project in Queensland in the 1860s. Surviving records of the Company's connections with Australia were microfilmed as part of the Miscellaneous series of the Australian Joint Copying Project. When the firm closed down in 1969 the National Library purchased the original documents except a number which had disappeared in the interval. The microfilm provides, therefore, the more complete copy.
