Biography/History

Irish nationalist and Premier of Victoria 1871-72. Duffy started work as a journalist in 1836 and in 1842 founded the Nation. This paper was suppressed for advocating rebellion in 1848-49. Duffy emigrated to Australia in 1855 and in the following year was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Between 1857 and 1865 he held various positions, including Minister of Lands, and in 1871 became Premier and Chief Secretary of Victoria.
