Series

Early American imprints. Series I, Evans (1639-1800); no. 10897.

Notes

Verse of ninety-four lines; first line: Awake my muse, and strike the mournful lyre.

Followed by: The epitaph upon her grave-stone.

Another edition spells "epitaph" with an upper case "E" and has variant setting of type and relief cut.

Dated: East-Hampton, ex meo musæo, March 1st, 1768.

Samuel Buell, minister of the church at East Hampton, Long Island, is identified by Evans as the author of a similarly titled elegiac poem which also ends with the phrase "East-Hampton, ex meo musæo" and which was printed by Timothy Green at New London, Conn. (Evans 11591). Because the Hedges were a prominent family in East Hampton, this poem was presumably written by Buell as well and printed at New London by Timothy Green.

Text in two columns; printed area measures 30.9 x 22.3 cm.

Microform version available in the Readex Early American Imprints series.
