In this passionate tribute to Rainer Maria Rilke, Patricia Holburd Heidenheimer presents, in an innovative artist book format, her own translations of two of the poet's major texts: the 1922 Sonnets to Orpheus (selected) and the 1904 full-length narrative poem, Orpheus. Eurydice. Hermes. In Holburd Heidenheimer's book, the sonnets hover airily above an underworld that forms the backdrop for the text of Rilke's narrative. Of the latter work, which describes Orpheus's descent into Hades to bring back his dead wife Eurydice, Holburd Heidenheimer writes, "Rilke is now ready to praise the earth as part of the dual kingdoms of life and death, both of which he joyously affirms." -From the prospectus.
