 Summer Opening Hours:

Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

Biography/History

Dominion Monarch, regarded as a unique ship in terms of design, quality and passenger service. A quadruple screw motor vessel was the most powerful motor liner in the world with an average speed of 19.2 knots. A v. large cargo-passenger liner with 385 in the ship's company servicing 525 first class passengers. The voyage from Southampton to Wellington took 35 days, via Las Palmas, Capetown, Fremantle, Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington. She epitomised the era of stylish traditional sea travel (between 1939; 1948-1962) and during her day was regarded as the largest ship on the Australasian route.
