Born in Aramac, Queensland on 12 March 1912. Won the Queensland middleweight and lightweight titles in 1922. His last fight was in 1930. On retirement he worked in Melbourne as a bread-carter then refereed for Stadiums Limited. A controversial decision in the 1940s channelled him into boxing journalism for the next thirty years. Much respected, William rose to edit the 'Sporting Globe'. He co-compered 'TV Ringside' with Ron Casey after 1968 where his collourful phraseology became legendary, one famous quip being 'he had less chance than a crippled prawn in a flock of seagulls'. Williams delighted in being director of the 'Herald and Weekly Times' Royal Children's Hospital Appeal (1960-64).
