- Military map of the city of Lahore and its surroundings. After the end of the first Anglo-Sikh War, 1845-1846, the British Governor-General, Lord Hardinge, entered the Sikh capital of Lahore on 20 February 1846, and on 9 March imposed upon the young Maharaja Duleep Singh, then only a young boy under the regency of his mother, a treaty of peace. The treaty accused the Lahore government and the Sikh army of having violated the terms of the treaty of 1809 by unprovoked aggression on British provinces. The British annexed the Jullundur Doab and sold the hill country between the Beas and the Indus rivers to Gulab Singh. The Sikh army was greatly reduced. All guns were taken over by the British, and they were given permission to pass through the Punjab. The British based in Lahore promised not to interfere in the internal administration at Lahore, but in reality the British controlled everything in Lahore and the young raj was only a figurehead. Relief is shown by hachures.
