Folkloric recording: REEL 2720/41/36-37. Conversation: - 1. Discusses the Chinese mines at Backwater, why no more Chinese came to Australia, how it was shameful for a Chinese to have their pigtail cut off. 2. May Lowe converses. 3. Recalls his third cousin, Jimmy Bennet, May washed and ironed for Mrs. Bennet. 4. Recalls his father born in Nundle, how his paternal grandfather was a bush carpenter and shearer, shingle splitter and miner, how his father and his brother would dig when they were boys, how Old Ted was not very knowledgeable knowing nothing about Nundle and started mining at Rocky Gully near Backwater, how Jim prospected on the sly at Stonebrook Station, potholing, anti-Chinese riot at Hanging Rock, miners didn't understand anything about the world economy and rarely had any schooling, Jim went mining to Stannum but sold up everything to see his dying mother, discusses the different sorts of tin, how Jim rated himself with other miners, how he didn't like work but would work well for a boss, haymaking, his dislike of mining, Backwater as a community which centred around mining, the problems in staking out claims, the environmental effect of mining, the local mining registry was at Glen Innes, cost of mining rights, demographic details of Backwater, how rabbits were first introduced in 1906 and the motor car shortly after, the Oban Mission "the Blacks Reserve, appearance of Halley's Comet in 1910.
