John Gardiner (1798-1878) migrated to Van Diemen's Land from Ireland in 1822 with his wife Mary Eagle and her family and received a grant of land on the Macquarie River. He became an official of the Bank of Van Diemen's Land. In 1833 Gardiner moved to New South Wales and acquired land near Yass. In 1836 with John Hepburn, Joseph Hawdon and several others, he drove cattle overland from the Murrumbidgee River to Port Phillip. He settled at Port Phillip and built a house at Gardiner's Creek (near Hawthorn). He was for a time the manager of the Bank of Port Phillip. Gardiner left Australia in 1853.
