- Map of the isolated island of Saint Hellena [i.e. St. Helena] situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 miles from the coast of west Africa. Before the Suez Canal was built, it served as a strategic island for ships on their way to the Indian Ocean and held by Great Britain since the 17th century. Based on the first map of St. Helena to be published in English by John Seller in 1675, John Thornton later copied this map but added the inset of Trinidade [i.e. Trinidad] and published it in 1703.
