Cutting, Jeff, 1945- Blood red noon, photography of the Brindabella & southern ACT fires of January 2003.

Summary

"Mount Stromlo Observatory at 1400 hrs, 19:01:03. I had heard that there was considerable damage to the Mount Stromlo Observatory, almost beyond belief, so I drove up there and got a clearance from the security person at the new roadblock. There I met up with the new Director of Mount Stromlo Observatory Professor Penny Sackett on site with some of her senior staff and was told of the appalling losses on the mountain including the export project destroyed in the Instrument Workshops which she showed me after which I took her photograph. The damage to the observatory was catastrophic in it's entirety and in detail with the loss of the following historically important telescopes: the 74 inch "Grubb-Parsons" Reflector; the 50 inch "Great Melbourne" telescope; the 30 inch "Reynolds" Reflector; the 9 inch "Oddie" Refractor and the 26 inch "Yale-Columbia" Refractor. Added to this was the loss of the Observatory Library with the Archives, the Administrative Building, the Instrument Workshops and eight staff houses."--Note from the photographer.
