Dr Alex Wodak trained as a physician and was appointed Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service, St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney in 1982. He helped to establish the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre and the Australian Society of HIV Medicine, and also Australia's first needle syringe programme and first medically supervised injecting centre. Dr. Wodak is President of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation and is a member of several state and national committees. He also works in developing countries to assist efforts to control HIV infection among injecting drug users. He was President of the International Harm Reduction Association from 1996-2004.
