Notes

World map illustrating Buddhist teachings. The greater part of the space is taken up by what was supposed to be India. Europe is depicted as a group of small islands and South America as an island lying to the south of Japan. Africa does not appear at all. Relief shown pictorially.

Mounted cover title.

At head of title: Bankoku shōka no zu.

Wood block print.

Includes in upper left margin a bibliography of 102 works consulted in the compilation of the map.

In lower left and right margins is the text in Chinese with Japanese reading marks, giving the theoretical explanations of the map and the ideas it applied -- cataloguer.

Ramming, (1954), "Remarks to reproduced Japanese maps", Imago Mundi, v.10, p. 128. The map reproduced as fig. 2, facing p. 124. Map is described as " ... prototype of Buddhist world maps." (p.124) "... whose main distinctive feature is their completely unscientific character." (p. 128).
