Notes

Map of Cocos Island (5N̊30'34", 87W̊06'18") is situated in the Pacific Ocean near Costa Rica. First discovered in 1526 by Spanish expeditions, throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries it served as a station for British whaling ships and a supply stop for British pirates and privateers. In 1793, the two main bays were named by British Captain James Colnett, who drew the first known map of the island highlighting the island's two bays. Since 1820 there has been a popular belief that treasure was buried on the island though it has not yet been found. Uninhabited, Coco Island belonged to no one until Costa Rica officially took possession of it in 1869.

Imprint on map: London : A. Arrowsmith, 1798.

From: A voyage to the South Atlantic and round Cape Horn into the Pacific Ocean ... undertaken and performed by Captain James Colnett in the ship Rattler. London : W. Bennett, 1798.
