S.E. Roberts (1825-1905) was born in England and immigrated to South Australia in 1848. A printer by trade, Roberts also tried his hand as a farmer, prospector, small business owner, stock-broker and land reformer. Roberts was a well-known figure in Adelaide and concerned himself with the various social and political questions of the day. He was also a fastidious collector, and the eclectic maps featured in this collection form a picture of the colony from 1839 to 1886.
Some items in this collection have been attributed to the hand or collection of Eustace Reveley Mitford (1811-1869). Mitford was an associate of S.E. Roberts, being the editor and illustrator of the 'Pasquin' journal which Roberts printed.
Apart from a significant amount of cadastral mapping and surveying, numerous items in the collection feature South Australian mines and mineral claims in the mid 19th century, particularly those found on the Yorke Peninsula. Vast copper deposits were discovered there from 1859 and numerous disputes regarding rights to these claims ensued. 'Mills vs Ryan' was a famous case at the time, and Mitford himself was involved in a dispute with Walter Watson Hughes (1803-1887). Hughes went on to form the Moonta Mining Company and became a main miner on the Yorke Peninsula. Many items featured in the collection document these discoveries, developments and disputes [see items 5, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 33].
