William Archer was born in Scotland and studied at Edinburgh University. He was in Australia in 1876-77, and stayed 6 months with his parents, who at that time owned a property "Gracemere", in Queensland. Archer wrote a melodrama, Australia, or The bushrangers, with A.G. Stanley, based on the exploits of the Kelly gang (manuscript in the British Library). This was produced in London in April, 1881. He subsequently became noted in Britain as a journalist, author, theatre critic and translator into English of the plays of Ibsen.
