Marie Coleman, journalist/consultant worked first as Senior Medical Social Worker, Preston and Community Hospital and then with the Asthma Foundation; in 1969 Director of the Victorian Council of Social Services; in 1972 Chair of the National Social Welfare Commission; from 1976-1982 Director of the Office of Child Care in the Dept. of Social Security, and Special Adviser in the Social Welfare Policy Secretariat from 1982-1987; from 1986-1990 First Assistant Secretary, Policy Development Division, Commonwealth Dept. of Community Services and Health, Director of the National Foundation of Australian Women and worked with the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia; between 1991-1993 Visiting Fellow at the Australia-New Zealand Studies Centre, Pennsylvania, and then Acting Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies; in 1994 resumed her position as First Assistant Secretary in the Dept. of Human Services and Health until her retirement in 1995.
