- Description:
-
- [London : s.n., between 1782 and 1784]
- 1 sheet ; 34 cm.
- Summary:
-
An unrecorded contemporary explanation in English and French of the Bartolozzi engraving after Webber's Death of Cook which was issued separately prior to the third voyage account (1784), presumably authored by Webber. The text gives a brief account of the circumstances leading to Cook's death, before captioning the work with details drawn from the voyage account. It gives a careful description of the three main figures: Cook, 'calling to his people in the boats to cease firing'; the 'Chief advancing from the croud'; the 'figure lying on the ground represents Mr. Philips (the Marine officer) ...'. The impact of the print was unparalleled. The general mis-en-scene that Webber created would become the standard of nearly every engraving succeeding it.
