Donald Beard talks about his parents and their background; his education; the Great Depression and its impact on the family; his interest in sport; choosing to study medicine; being fast-tracked through medicine and university life during war years; friendships; the Royal Adelaide Hospital; Sir Henry Newland; getting general medical experience; Army service; being sent for 12 months to Japan as part of the Occupation forces; his expectations of medical life after army service in occupation and choosing to stay for an additional 6 months work. He discusses in detail his time in the Korean War; the medical recovery and treatment of wounded troops; his surgical training at Adelaide in 1952 and 1953; heading to England for further training at the College of Surgeons; working in Scotland and England, gaining his qualifications; his promising career in England and the progress of his cricketing career; his father's illness and return to Australia; the difficulties in gaining a position in South Australia.
Beard speaks of his eventual move to Adelaide Hospital to finish his work as Registrar; time in New Guinea; meeting Margaret Dunn, his future wife; his entry into private practice and busy surgical life; his appointment at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital; being head of surgical services at Modbury Hospital in 1973; the Vietnam Conflict, his service there; his work with ex-servicemen; how his family coped during his absence; establishing the Modbury Hospital; the changing role of Medical Superintendent; his retirement from Modbury in 1990, and final retirement from medicine at age of 80 years; working with prisoners at Yatala Prison and their response to his retirement; his love of cricket and his involvement as a surgeon for South Australian Cricket Association (SACA); the support of his parents, wife and family; his appreciation of his life and work and the opportunities he was offered by others.
