- Summary:
-
"Bob Turner was a Sydney boy being born there on the 6th May 1883. At 5ft 9in he was considered tall for a lightweight, a feature he used with great effect through out his almost twenty year career. Turner started boxing in 1899 and lost his first bout to Tibby Watson, but then ran up a long winning streak against people like Tibby Watson, Nipper Peakes, Joe Thomal, Paddy King, Ned Cullen, Tom Dunn and Jack McGowan. He became Australian lightweight champion by defeating Jack McGowan at the Gaiety Hall in Sydney on November 24th 1902. Bob was to win and lose the title three times between 1902 and 1905. For the next thirteen years he was the main stumbling block for any young aspirin lightweight to get past. He swapped punches with fourteen Australian champions, all of them more than once. Hock Keys was his nemesis. They met five times with Keys winning them all. Turner retired in 1918 aged thirty five. He looked a lot older. Bob was typical of many fighting men at that time. He fought to live. It was his work, his job and he was a first class tradesman."--Notes on verso.
