James Ebenezer Bicheno was appointed colonial secretary of Van Diemen's Land in September 1842. He was a keen amateur botanist and experimented with plants on his small farm on the banks of the New Town Rivulet. Born 25 January 1785. Died 25 February 1851. Undertook economic and scientific studies, called to the Bar of the Middle Temple 1822, secretary, Linnean Society 1825-32, partner in iron-works, Glamorganshire 1832-42, colonial secretary, Van Diemen's Land 1842. Fellow, Linnean Society 1812 and had several papers on botany and natural history in its "Transactions". Assisted Sir William Jardine in preparing the two volumes of "Illustrations of Ornithology" (Edinburgh, 1830). Experimented with plants on his small farm on the banks of the New Town Rivulet, Van Diemen's Land, lectured on botany to the Mechanics' Institute and had papers published in the "Transactions of the Royal Society of Tasmania". Early vice-president, Royal Society of Tasmania, vice-president, Mechanics' Institute 1849.
