The collection comprises letters, diaries, photo albums, post-cards and newspaper cuttings describing in detail her travels in Australia and overseas. Includes a copy of her manuscript 'Other customs, other ways', a diary of her trip to Ceylon with her husband, who was in Ceylon for six months as an adviser on health services. Includes diary entries describing the re-enactment of Charles Sturt's exploration of the Murray River, filmed by the ABC to celebrate the centenary of his voyage; and diary entries that retrace exploration by Sir Thomas Mitchell. Correspondence to her daughter Margaret Spencer; other correspondence, a small amount of material relating to Maurice Pate (UNICEF); and a Red Cross arm badge (c. 1916) is included.

Gladys Maeva Cumpston was the wife of J. H. L. Cumpston (1880-1954), historian, writer, and Australia's first Federal Director of Health. In 1949-1950 Mrs Cumpston wrote an account of her journey to and time spent in Ceylon, entitled 'Other customs, other ways'. Later in 1950 Mrs Cumpston wrote a diary account of an ABC re-enactment of Charles Sturt's voyage to find the mouth of the Murray River.
