- Summary:
-
Kangaroo shooter Jimmy Skinner at the wheel of his 1928(?) Chevrolet tourer, converted into a utility. Jim's assistant, Aboriginal lad Norman Flash, rides in the back of the Chev. Ute. The utility was pioneered in Australia in the early 1900's, though they were first commercially manufactured in the USA. Most shooting was done at night, when the vehicle could approach within twenty or thirty metres range. Jim used a .22 rimfire, harvesting on average sixty kangaroos on nights when conditions were favourable. On average he would shoot three or four nights per week and during the winter months when pelts were thick and brought the best prices. At the time (1958), Jim and his wife Dinah lived in a bore keeper's cottage on Urisino Station, around sixty kilometres west of Wanaaring in northwest New South Wales. Employed by the Pastures Protection Board, bore keepers maintain the bores, drinking troughs and yards along outback stock routes. Wages were low and most bore keepers engaged in other work such as 'roo shooting, dog (dingo) trapping, shearing or fencing.
