MS 3131 comprises manuscripts and research notes for Jim Gibbney's theses and publications: Hugh Mahon: a political biography; Eurobodalla; articles for the Australian dictionary of biography (ADB); Gibbney's doctoral thesis (ANU) titled Canberra, 1913-53; Taken at Tilba; Memoirs of George Shaffs; and, material concerning a bicentennial history. The collection also includes seminar papers, lectures, correspondence and archives. Other papers are personal letters, letterbooks and diaries. There is a typescript titled "A guide to the records of the Australian Capital Territory", with alterations and corrections. A letter dated 30 May, 1988, to Graeme Powell from Antoinette Buchanan, archivist of the Ferguson Memorial Library, is also included (39 boxes).
The Acc04.153 instalment comprises theses, reprints and publications containing the writings of Gibbney (1 large carton).
The Acc11.002 instalment comprises letters written by Jim Gibbney to his family while on a trip to the Northern Territory in 1959. There are also letters to Jim Gibbney from his brother, Leslie Gibbney, written while on a trip to Heard Island in 1950, together with cables sent from Leslie Gibbney to Phillip Law while on a trip to Heard Island in 1952. Included with the correspondence is a program for the opening ceremony of the Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1888 (2 folders).

Archivist, historian and biographer. Herbert James (Jim) Gibbney joined the staff of the Commonwealth National Library in Canberra in 1950. In 1952, Gibbney transferred to its Archives Division which, in 1961, became a separate organisation. In 1965, Gibbney was appointed as a research officer with the Australian dictionary of biography, where he remained until his retirement in 1983. During this time he assembled more than 80 entries for the Australian dictionary of biography. Gibbney published a number of books and articles including Labor in print: a guide to the people who created a labor press in Australia between 1850 and 1939 (1975), Eurobodalla: a history of the Moruya district (1980), and Canberra 1913-1953 (1988).
