All three sisters discuss their birth place, Chiltern in northern Victoria, as well as their later homes in Leongatha and Williamstown, they recall their early homes, schooldays and recreational activities, their accompanying of their father who with a police escort would collect gold from the diggings around Chiltern, how their father as a bank manager for the Bank of Australasia came to visit a hotel in Glenrowan on bank business some hours before it was visited by the Kelly Gang, memories of World War I, travelling by suburban steam trains from Melbourne to Williamstown. Mrs Jessup recalls how Helen Keller had visited the Melbourne Botanical Gardens while her late husband was then Chief State Botanist and while they were living in a cottage within the park, how her husband had refused permission for the authorities to dig up the park for air raid shelters during World War II. Mrs Stokes gives more details on life in Chiltern, and the social distinctions between a bank manager's children and other town children.
