The Acc09.198 instalment comprises documents relating to Janet Powell's activities as senator; documents on issues during her leadership, including the Gulf War, recall of Parliament, immigration and population policy, negotiations with the Greens and leadership challenge; correspondence on Gulf War position; documents on her career after loss of leadership, period as independent, and 1993 election campaign; speeches; articles prepared for publications; press clippings covering Murray branch, elections, first years in the Senate, leadership, resignation from the Democrats, period as independent; Australian Democrats publications including original constitution and policy papers, national journals, national conference papers, Victorian Division newsletters (13 boxes).

Biography/History

Politician. Janet Frances Powell was born in Nhill, Victoria in 1942. As a member of the Australian Democrats, Powell was elected to the Senate in 1986 as the representative for Victoria. She became the third leader of the Australian Democrats, 1990-1991. Powell resigned from the party in 1992 and formed her own political party, the Janet Powell Independents' Network, continuing as an independent senator until she was defeated at the 1993 election. In 2004 she joined the Australian Greens and stood as a candidate in the November 2006 Victorian State election for the Eastern Metropolitan Region in the Legislative Council.
