Mathews talks about his family background; care by extended family; father's re-marriage; impact of WWII; experience of both Catholicism and Anglicanism; education at Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School and his first job at County Hall, Maidstone as a local government clerk. He then talks about working as clerk on a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker; working with "Sevenoaks Chronicle"; marriage in 1957; employed by News Limited and coming to Australia in 1960 on assisted passage. Mathews then gives his first impressions of Australia and talks about Rohan Rivett and the Stewart case. He then came to Canberra to work with the "Canberra Times" in 1963 and he talks about the various positions he held; personalities working on the paper at the time; production of special editions for events such as the Kennedy assassination and competition with "The Australian."
