Actor, broadcaster and writer. Claire Dunne was born in Dublin and emigrated to Australia with her family in 1957, when she was twenty. During the 1960s and 1970s she worked as a presenter and occasional actor in television, and was the lead female actor in the 1966 film They're a weird mob. In 1975 she joined Radio Ethnic Australia, which was incorporated into the newly established Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) in 1976. She produced and directed the programme Eire san Astrail (Ireland in Australia) on SBS in the 1980s. In 1985-1986 Dunne was a member of the council of the Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs.
Dunne was an official visitor to New South Wales prisons between 1972 and 1979 and she produced an ABC radio programme entitled Poems from prisons, featuring interviews with three prison poets and including readings of their poetry by John Bell. During the 1970s and 1980s Dunne was involved with the peace movement and the United Nations Association of Australia. In 1988 she published People under the skin: an Irish immigrant's experience of Aboriginal Australia. Also in 1988, Dunne produced and presented a two part ABC radio programme on Mary MacKillop. Her book Mary MacKillop: no plaster saint: a pioneering woman for our time, was published in 1991. Dunne has also worked as an occasional journalist, and television and radio script writer.
