Folkloric recording. Laurence John Shortt talks his father's family background in Ireland and his work in Jindabyne; his mother's family, their background and properties; feuding families; leases in high country e.g. 'Snowy Plain'; other holdings and close friends; his schooling; his 23 years of rodeo work; learning saddle making and leather work, horse-breaking and shearing; 'Buck Reinhardt', a gun shearer; a bull riding accident; amateur riding and competing; his work organising rodeos; his retirement after marriage (1986); snow clearing (1981-1989); attending shearing school, then shearing full time; the use of the sling and 'polishing' the sheep; his shearing jobs around Michelego.
Shortt discusses his decision to make saddles; attending classes in Beaudesert and Jimboomba; building his shed and working full time at saddle making; troubles obtaining old type material, the loss of skills and need to save the heritage of saddle making; an organised ride for the Snowy River Festival; his horses and their abilities; the trail riding organisation, Australian Trail Horse Riders Association (ATHRA); the invention of the Rotary motor; his song writing and the band 'Greg Powell and the Horse Handler'; struggling to survive on custom made saddles; the need for other work e.g., rabbit gutting; how bush women are great cooks; vegetable gardens; climate change, crops now and in the past; the Snowy and Murrumbidgee rivers; leather working. Alex and Laurence talk about songs and their content.
