- Summary:
-
This concise work discusses the events leading to the Aboriginal problem, and the steps taken over the years for its solution. It concentrates on setting down information about Victorian Aborigines. It begins with a detailed exposition of the Tribal Aborigine's way of life, and their complete assimilation with their tribal territory. It shows the effect upon the tribes of the coming of the white man's diseases, and the ruthless behaviour of the sealers, who preceded the first white colonists to Victoria. It describes the official attitude to the Aborigines in Victoria, from the signing of the Batman Deeds, through the formation of the Native Police and the establishment of the Protectorate, to the inception of the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. Finally, it discusses the present attitudes of white and black Australians towards each other, and the stumbling blocks on the path to assimilation.
