Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

In March 1923 the Commonwealth Government secured for the people of Australia the Journal kept by Captain James Cook during his famous voyage of discovery in H.M.S. Endeavour : from which have been reprinted these passages, in the hope that there may be kindled in the minds of the children of Australia, an interest in that great navigator to whom we owe the possession of our Australian continent / presented by the Committee of the Commonwealth National Library

Reproduction of engraving signed N. Dance, pinxit, J. K. Sherwin, sculpsit [Beddie, 3378]. "With extracts from the Endeavour Journal in facsimile and roman type. Souvenir published by the Commonwealth National Library to mark the acquisition by the Library in 1923 of the Endeavour Journal and distributed to state schools" - Beddie 3389

The broadside has a black and white portrait of Captain Cook in the centre and two extracts from the journal. One extract describes the ceremony that took place on Possession Island on 22 August 1770. The other is a passage written by Captain Cook in August 1770 after had had completed the navigation of the entire east coast of Australia.
