MS 7984 chiefly comprises correspondence and photographs with some programmes and subject files on abortion, the Australian Capital Territory government, Australian Council for the Arts, Armed Forces and marijuana. The correspondence is mostly from the period 1975-1986 while the photographs are mostly mounted in albums, many relating to overseas trips (41 boxes, 2 cartons, 5 fol. boxes, 1 map folio).
The Acc02.203 instalment comprises the transcript of an interview with Clyde Cameron; miscellaneous interview transcripts, 90th birthday cards, papers relating to the Mabo ruling, "I did it my way" articles, speeches, and National Archives guides; correspondence and papers; honours, awards and miscellaneous correspondence; two award certificates; loose photographs of 90th birthday celebrations and videos (8 boxes, 1 map folio).
The Acc03.185 instalment comprises further papers, however, apart from speeches and cuttings, there are relatively few papers dating from Gorton's early political career. For his three years as Prime Minister there are a number of subject files, a comprehensive set of speeches, press statements and transcripts of interviews and cutting books, photograph albums and a large number of loose photographs. The later papers include correspondence files extending to about 1995, radio broadcasts, articles for newspapers, and newspaper cuttings of John Gorton (6 boxes, 1 carton).

Prime minister. John Grey Gorton was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1911. He was elected Senator for Victoria in 1949 and held the seat until 1968. During the prime ministership of Robert Menzies, Gorton's portfolios included the Navy, 1958-1963, CSIRO, 1962-1963, Interior, 1963-1964, and Works, 1963-1966. In the Holt and then McEwen governments he was Minister for Works, 1966-1967, and Minister for Education and Science, 1966-1968. In 1966, he became Leader of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party. Gorton became the first senator to be appointed prime minister, 1968-1971, resigning from the Senate to enter the House of Representatives as the Liberal member for the seat of Higgins, Victoria. In the December 1975 general election, he stood unsuccessfully as an independent Senate candidate for the Australian Capital Territory. Following the election Gorton retired from politics. In 1988, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for service to the government and politics, and in 2001 he received a Centenary Medal. Gorton died in Sydney in 2002.
