Rhodes, Jon, 1947- Cage of ghosts, 1994-2006

Summary

The images on the panel are of a 6.5m rock engraving of a whale, enclosed by a white rail fence at Balls Head. Inside the whale, close to the tail is a figure of a man who is thought to be a "carradhy" or "clever man". The panel includes a reproduction of a portrait of Balloderree by the Port Jackson Painter held by the British Museum. Balloderree was about 19-20 years old and had been living at Governor Phillip's house at Sydney Cove in 1790. Balloderree contracted a serious illness and despite attempts by a "carradhy" to exorcise the malevolent spirits, Balloderree died. He was buried in the Governor's garden on the 17 December 1791.
