1. Letters written to his brother, Ronald, the first at age 14 from the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay, and the last the year before his death. They are family letters, with very little discussion of his career. There are several letters from Ronald to Alan. 2. Unpublished poems written in the 1930s.
- Biography/History:

Sir Alan McNicoll joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1922 and became a Rear Admiral in 1957. He was Deputy Secretary of the Department of Defence, 1958-1959; was Second Naval Member of the Naval Board, 1960-1961; Flag Officer Commanding H.M. Australian Fleet, 1962-1964 and Chief of the Australian Naval Staff, Canberra, 1965-1968. Retired.
