The Acc09.019 instalment includes manuscripts, correspondence and research material written and collected by Capell, relating to linguistics, ethnography, education, sociology, musicology, religion, mission studies and poetry. The papers are arranged geographically and cover Papua New Guinea, European, Indian sub-continent, Proto-Oceanic, Fijian, Southeast Asian and East Asian, Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Proto-Austronesian, Timor, Irian Jayan and Indonesian subjects.

The Acc14.069 instalment comprises notes on Fijian linguistics.

Biography/History

Linguist, anthropologist and academic. Arthur Capell was ordained an Anglican minister in 1926, and shortly after became a reader in Oceanic languages at Sydney University. He graduated with a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 1936. His early and significant linguistic work was in New Guinea. Capell published a large number of works on language that include The linguistic position of south-eastern Papua (1943), A new approach to Australian linguistics (1956) and linguistic surveys of Australia, the South Western Pacific and New Guinea.
