Dr FitzGerald is given an introduction by the University's Vice Chancellor. Dr FitzGerald starts by outlining his first impressions of China and recalls some of the restrictions imposed on his movements once he had arrived at Peking. He describes the difficulty that Westerners have in understanding the way of life and the way that the people think in China and explains how he went about finding out how the country works. He talks about the mood of the Chinese people after the death of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung in 1976 and their feeling of elation when the so-called Gang of Four were overthrown in October of that year. He then gives the reasons behind his decision to return to Australia.
He then anwers questions from his audience. These questions include such subjects as: the need to reasses some of the views and misconceptions currently held in the West about China - especially the misconception about the so-called radicals and moderates of the country; the power behind one of China's politicians - Chairman Wau Go Fung and questions about China's foreign policy with particular regard to the Soviet Union and the United States; and China's commitment to the support of revolutions in South-East Asia. Also the relations between states and parties within China. He spoke for 45 minutes on side 1. Side 2 was blank.
