Russell, a feminist and South Australian public service administrator, speaks of her family background and early influences on her development; attending University High School in Melbourne; ethnic diversity; experiences in the workplace and marriage; her involvement in the Women's Electoral Lobby which developed an interest in working women's issues; the establishment of the Working Women's Centre and the personal impact this had on her; her interests at university including sociology and the study of deviance; lesbianism; undertaking an MA in Women's Studies in Britain which includes the methodology of Women's Studies; studying the tension between Women's Movement and academia; the links between Women's Liberation and Gay Liberation movements.
Russell discusses the founding of Women's Studies at Flinders and Adelaide universities; Radio 5UV Women's Liberation programmes; overview of her career since the 1980's; gender vs. sex in her personal style and its effects on her employment; her style and focus while employed as Equal Opportunity Officer for the S. Aust. Public Service Board; her employment as an Antarctic Station Leader, first at Casey Station in 1991 and later at Macquarie Island in 1994; her period on the unattached list; how she came to head Human Resources in the S. Aust. Police Dept. (SAPOL); how the Women's Movement and feminism have affected her own career; the impact of the Women's Movement in changing society generally.
