Summary

Canvasses the option of school autonomy in remote area communities; existing government schools may choose to take on greater autonomy based on an opt-in model, or new autonomous schools might be established; autonomous schools considered in this discussion would still be public schools, but would be non-systemic, with a different decision making and accountability structure from standard government schools; argues that autonomous schools can constitute an important element of policy solutions aimed at improving the educational outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
