"Polar Boy is the tale of a 14th Century polar community, the Thule (too-lee) people, who migrated from Alaska to Canada. The main character, Illuak, has been told by his soothsayer Grandmother that it is his fate to save his people from a bear. But the mere thought of a polar bear makes Illuak's stomach churn and he lives in fear of this destined encounter. Illuak eventually summons the courage to rescue a Northman child from a polar bear. But, in doing so, realises there is a greater challenge involved in the prophecy - to face Bear, the Northmens leader. Illuak is initially terrified, but shows great strength and calls the Bear to him - an act which eventually unites the two tribes. Illuak's journey ends with the beginning of another following the Bear to the green lands in search of adventure."--provided by publisher.
