Astronomer. Sidney Charles Bartholomew (Ben) Gascoigne was born in Napier, New Zealand, in 1915 and completed Ph.D. studies at the University of Bristol, 1938-1941. In August 1941 Gascoigne moved to Australia where he contributed to the optical munitions work being undertaken at the then Commonwealth Solar Observatory. After the war, he played a significant role in the development of Mt Stromlo Observatory and in the training of astronomers at the Australian National University as Professor in Astronomy, 1964-1980. Gascoigne continued to maintain a close connection with Mt Stromlo after his retirement in 1980. He was also a key figure in the establishment of the Anglo-Australian Telescope, launched at Coonabarabran in New South Wales in 1974. Gascoigne was married to Australian sculptor Rosalie Gascoigne. In 1996 he was appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia for service to observational astronomy and for his contribution to astronomical optics. Gascoigne died in Canberra in 2010.
