Peter Maralwanga (in his own language) speaks about life in the bush before the establishment of Maningrida Settlement; the mixture of tribal cultures and languages there; games, with blunted spears and footballs made from buffalo bladders; the first Maningrida settlement (1957), housing; the reasons why his family moved permanently to Maningrida; building houses and an airstrip; exchanging his pay cheque for food and other provisions at the store; seeing his first football match in Darwin; playing in the first-ever game of football in Maningrida; other sports played in Maningrida; how at Christmas there was a corroboree, singing and dancing; sports days with prizes; why football has become so popular in Maningrida and other Aboriginal communities; basketball; Bob Turner.

Peter Maralwanga was born in the bush before the establishment of a trading station at Maningrida in 1947. He moved to the Maningrida settlement after it was established by the Commonwealth Welfare branch in 1957. Peter recalls playing 'traditional' football before White contact and the first sports played in the Maningrida settlement.
